One day when his mother Camila told him to dump his latest flame and go out with more proper women, he told her to dump Dr. Camila liked to play the piano, and, ahem, also with Doctor Gervásio. Ruth played the violin and the twins loved to play in the garden. Men worked and women served.įrancisco had a beautiful wife, Camila and four children, Mario, Ruth and the twin girls Lia and Rachel. He worked long hours to build up his coffee export business in Río de Janeiro. “Trabalhar! Trabalhar é bom para os homens, de pele endurecida e alma feita de coragem.”įrancisco Teodoro was a hard working man. This is a great book for everyone and especially those looking to understand a feminist perspective from early XX century Brazil. The author just manages to navigate really well between the deepest thoughts of the characters.

There is an understanding for the pressures he suffered as man who was the only provider for the whole family. Yet, the description of the thoughts of the man just before he pulled the gun are very human and there is no judgement by the author. The way the main male character decided to kill himself because he felt he couldn't serve his family (and humankind in general) anymore, contrasts with the effort his wife turned widow makes to reunite the family at the very end. It's interesting to see how space is socially divided: at home, mostly women and in the office, mostly men.

The perspective is unique and the descriptions are quite vivid. Like most from that time, this book was also written by a rich white person - but a woman. I generally like realist books, so starting this one was easy.
